Last February, the National University of Singapore hosted two significant events in financial geography that brought together scholars from around the world. The Third FinGeo School (February 24-25) and the Second Global FinGeo Conference (February 26-28) created a week-long platform for rich academic exchange focused on the critical intersection of geopolitics and geoeconomics of finance.
The FinGeo School provided early career scholars with valuable learning opportunities to develop their understanding of financial geography through workshops and mentoring sessions. Following this, the main conference featured keynote addresses from renowned experts Professor Emma Mawdsley (University of Cambridge) and Professor Eric Helleiner (University of Waterloo), who shared their insights on contemporary challenges in global finance. What made these events particularly valuable was the interdisciplinary dialogue between researchers from the Global South and North, creating bridges across geography, political economy, financial economics, and development studies. Attendees engaged with pressing topics including global financial networks, climate finance, financial inclusion, and the geopolitical implications of emerging financial technologies.
The Singapore setting proved ideal for these discussions, positioning participants at the heart of a leading financial centre in Asia with unique perspectives on regional economic issues and global financial flows. The events fostered meaningful connections between early career and senior researchers, laying the groundwork for future research collaborations and international initiatives.
