This FinGeo blog article series is dedicated to the teaching of financial geography in higher education. Whilst research in financial geography has advanced considerably in recent years, there has been comparatively little discussion about how it is taught in higher education. This series contributes to this end by bringing together reflections from three teaching-active academics on their experiences in the classroom.
Dr Araby Smyth of Mount Allison University reflects on the design and delivery of a third-year undergraduate Geography of Finance course, arguing that financial geography provides a powerful and accessible framework for helping students understand how finance is embedded in everyday life. Dr Paweł Węgrzyn of the Warsaw School of Economics discusses the challenges of teaching financial geography in business schools, arguing that reframing the subject as a professional necessity—rather than an academic curiosity—can effectively engage economics and finance students. Dr Stefanos Ioannou of Oxford Brookes University illustrates how integrating financial geography into economics teaching enhances students’ understanding of real-world topics while also increasing their awareness of the value of qualitative research methods.
