CALL FOR PAPERS 1st FinGeo Global Conference 2019 Global Financial Shift? Mapping a Financialized World in Transformation Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China, September 15-18, 2019

The Global Network on Financial Geography (FinGeo), launched in 2015, has grown to an interdisciplinary membership of over 500 scholars and experts from over 50 countries around the world. Building on the success of several global seminars and a FinGeo Spring School, the time is ripe for FinGeo to start a new chapter by organizing a global conference. The first FinGeo global conference will be held at Beijing Normal University in China, on September 15-18, 2019. The FinGeo Global Conference 2019 will bring together researchers from geography, finance, economics, sociology, political science, urban studies, business studies, public policy and other disciplines from all over the world, to share research on new developments in the world of finance and their impacts on economy, society and environment at different scales, from local to global. We also welcome practitioners and policy makers to join the event. It will provide a platform for dialogue on the cutting-edge concepts, theories, methods and practices that can inform our understanding of the financialized world we all live in.

Conference themes will include (but will not be limited to) the following:

  1. The causes, mechanisms and consequences of financialization, and their spatiality

  2. Financial instability and crises in space and time

  3. Geographies of fintech and internet finance

  4. Geo-politics and political geography of finance

  5. International financial centers

  6. Global financial networks

  7. Financing and regional development

  8. Infrastructure finance

  9. Financing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)

  10. Offshore financial centers and tax havens

  11. Present and future of RMB internationalization

  12. Sustainable finance

  13. Financial inclusion and exclusion

  14. Finance, innovation and entrepreneurship

  15. Geographies of debt

  16. Microfinance and development

  17. The finance–real estate nexus

  18. Financial and business services complex

  19. Geography of financial markets (bank, venture capital and et al.)

Important dates

  1. December 2018: Call for papers

  2. January 2019: Website launch, online abstract submission opens

  3. 30 April 2019: Abstract submission deadline

  4. 15 September 2019: Opening of conference and special sessions for early career researchers

  5. 16 to 18 September 2019: Conference presentations

Abstract and special session proposal submission You may register and submit the abstract via the conference website (fingeo.bnu.edu.cn), which will be ready by the end of January, 2019. You are welcome to submit special session proposal to fingeo2019@163.com. The deadline for submission of session proposal is February 28, 2019.

Travel Grants

With the generous sponsorship from the journal EPA: Economy & Space, the Organizing Committee of the 1st FinGeo Global Conference will provide travel grants for 6 early career researchers (graduate students, and young scholars with less than 5 years post PhD) attending the conference, with preference for those travelling from lower-income countries. The travel grant will be 250-750 US dollars for each applicant. The winners of the travel grant will also be invited to join the youth forum of this conference. Early career researchers from all over the world are welcome to apply the travel grant. Please send your full application to fingeo2019@163.com not later than March 31, 2019. Please indicate in the subject line of the email with “Travel grant application”. Late applications will not be considered.

  1. Personal statement of the application (within 1 page)

  2. Curriculum Vitae (including list of publications, if applicable)

  3. Abstract or full paper to be presented in the conference
